Community Church is a big place. So we've come up with the following opportunities to help make it easy for you to feel at home and get connected as easily as possible.

Take advantage of these opportunities at your own pace.

Step 1 - Pastor's Chat
About once a month we invite those new to Community Church to Pastor Steve's house for Pastor's Chat. This is your opportunity to hear about our vision and values, meet some of our staff members, and get to know others new to Community Church in a relaxed, informal setting. Pastor's Chat is held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening. Click here for more information and to register for the next Pastor's Chat.

Step 2 - Join a Covenant Group
Covenant Groups are what we call small groups at Community Church. In a Covenant Group you'll get to know a few people well while you hang out together, study the Bible, serve others and just have fun. We'd like to get you connected in a group as soon as possible because we believe that's where people grow best. Click here for more information about Covenant Groups.

Step 3 - New Member Class
If you're considering membership, this is the place for you. This one day class, held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on a Saturday once a quarter, will answer your questions about Community Church, help you discover your spiritual gifts, and find a place to use them. This class is a prerequisite to membership, but taking the class does not obligate you to join. Click here for more information and to register for the next New Member Class.

Teaching Character to Three-Year-Olds - Parents

Different character qualities can be emphasized at different developmental stages. A newborn, for example, learns about love, trust, and a positive view of the world because of the loving care given by parents.
As children grow and develop, new character qualities are added to the picture. Preschoolers are at a strategic age to learn so much about life. Creativity, compassion, patience, confidence, and cooperation are just a few of the many new qualities that begin to develop during these years.

Two character qualities, in particular, become a focus in the parent/child relationship: Self-discipline and responsiveness to authority. But please don't think that teaching these qualities requires harshness, demandingness, or an authoritarian approach. Rather, these qualities can be taught with a loving firmness that prepares children for greater success in life.

Preschoolers learn self-discipline skills by coming when called instead of running away. These children also learn about a bedtime and how to hold a parent's hand in a store or out in public. Children resist these attempts to help them learn to give up their agenda, but that's what self-discipline is all about. Even adults resist a diet, staying on a budget, or an exercise program. If we can teach children self-discipline when they're preschoolers, they'll begin to develop significant tools for when they get older.

Talk about self-discipline with preschoolers. They may not understand the term yet, but they'll grow into it. We can teach self-discipline through a number of family rules. When we go into a store, we have the "No Touch Rule." When in a library or bank, we may use the "Don't be Wild Rule." When you first teach rules like these, start by making them fun. Teach the rules like a game, then put them into practice in life and enforce the new rules with repetition and practice.

"But my kids won't do these things," you may say. And maybe they won't unless you practice. But the preschool years are an excellent time to build some character qualities that will last a long time in a child's life.

Two Ways to Live - Two Ways to Live

Have you ever had someone ask you to explain your faith, and found yourself struggling to express the Gospel message in a clear, understandable way?

Two Ways to Live is a 6-week course that will help you gain confidence in both your understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and in your ability to share the Gosepl in a clear, understandable way. The Two Ways to Live presentation is based around six simple illustrations that actually lead an individual from creation to judgment, capturing the entirety of the Biblical message in a clear and succinct way. The presentation naturally leads to presentation of a decision about how one wants to live - the "Two Ways" to live - God's way, or your way.

At Community Church, it is our belief that every Christ-follower should be able to present the message of the Gospel in a clear, concise and direct way. The ability to do this will give the Christ-follower confidence to share the message of Jesus Christ more frequently and effectively.

The next Two Ways to Live class meets 10-10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, from November 23 to December 28, in the aerobics room at The Gathering Place. A participant's manual, including additional teaching on CD, is available in the bookstore for $10.

Tables of Christmas

Our speaker for Tables of Christmas 2008 is Jane Hoeppner. Jane is the widow of Terry Hoeppner, the coach who is credited with turning around the football program at Indiana University
from 2004 through 2007. Jane, a native Hoosier, was born in Indianapolis as the daughter of a Baptist minister. She graduated from Howe High School, and she met and married her husband
at Franklin College. Jane supported her husband, Terry, from the start of his 37-year coaching career at Eastbrook High School in Marion, Indiana, to the end of his career as head football coach at Indiana University, and all the moves in-between. Jane taught elementary school while raising their three children and now enjoys four grandsons.
Although her husband passed away in 2007 from complications of a brain tumor, Jane continues to be a presence on the Indiana University campus. She is still known affectionately as “Mrs. Hep”
to everyone she meets. Jane serves on the Capital Campaign for IU Athletics, the Coach Hep Cancer Challenge, and the Young Life Steering Committee.
Despite her recent loss, Jane wants to encourage us with a message of “Living Life with
Purpose.” She will share lessons from her past and show us how God is working
in her life today. She is a warm and genuine Christian woman who is working to “make God famous.” Every woman who attends Tables of Christmas will be able to relate to Jane in
some way as a wife, mother, teacher, grandmother, widow, or sister in Christ.
The sale of tables of eight for $80.00 and individual seats for $10.00 each is now in progress.
Come to the Welcome Counter on Sundays before and after services or stop in the church office during the week. In addition to Jane’s message, we will again enjoy a light meal, music of the season and, of course, all the beautiful and uniquely decorated tables.

Don’t miss this wonderful Christmas tradition for CCG women and their guests!

Welcome Kitsch Chicks to CCG

After working for months to get it off the ground, CCG’s new kitchen ministry is ready to go. Kitsch Chicks’ primary mission is to prepare and serve meals in a caring manner to those who have lost
family members, but their goals include a lot more than that. They want meals to be special occasions when they are served at CCG—with real china, glassware, and cutlery. They want people who come to our church to feel welcome in beautiful settings.
Kitsch Chicks is responsible for keeping an inventory of everything we have on hand in our two kitchens. Right now, we have 100 sets of china (dinner plate, salad plate, small bowl), 50 glass goblets, 200 glass hot/cold punch cups, a punch bowl, and some chafing dishes. We want to
supplement our inventory so that we have at least 100 complete table settings ready to use by anyone in the church. We also are using a linen service so that we have
nice tablecloths for all events.
How can you help? Check your kitchens for any of the following items that might be gathering dust and place them in the Hospitality Room kitchen (mark them for Kitsch Chicks): serving cart, stainless steel silverware, crock pots, carafes, clear Pyrex baking dishes, clear glass snack sets,
pretty serving pieces, clear pitchers, chafing dishes, small and clear salt/pepper shakers, or anything you think would set a pretty table. You can call Mary Ann Melbert for more specifics, 831-4771.
What should you do when you want to host a meal at CCG? Please contact Lezlie Keegan, ext 243 in the church office. She will help you fill out the paperwork necessary for borrowing the items
we have on hand and tell you about the procedures for cleaning up. The Kitsch Chicks ladies will always be available to help at funeral dinners and are looking forward to working with any flocks that also want to help their “sheep” at this time.
Is serving others in a cooking ministry your passion? If so, please contact Mary Ann Melbert at 831-4771 or rmelbert6651@sbcglobal.net to volunteer. She wants to create three teams of willing workers to take care of funeral dinners so that no one group is overworked. The Kitsch Chicks ladies want to thank Martha Davis for donating a new dishwasher to the Hospitality Room kitchen in memory of her husband, Frank Davis. Without the dishwasher, this ministry would never have been possible. Thanks, Martha!

Helping Hands

As you can see from the article above, new opportunities for ministry are happening all the time at CCG, but these ministries need help from you to grow and flourish. We need many helping
hands to step forward in all the programs the Women’s Ministry is sponsoring. We need leaders and workers, quiet people and those who love to talk, organizers and those who follow through. If you completed a Finding Your Fit card in October and noted Women’s Ministry, we can’t wait to talk with you. Expect to hear from us soon. If you didn’t complete the card or you didn’t mark Women’s Ministry, please pick up a card at the Welcome Center and share your interests with us. It takes all kinds of gifts to keep these ministries running. For more information on how you can
help, contact Carol Joseph, 888-1600 or Delora Craig, ext 257 at CCG.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Community Church of Greenwood has a support group for breast cancer survivors. The group, called Uplifters, began in 1999 with the help of Pastor Jan Billups and has continued through the years under the leadership of Carolyn Tinkle, a survivor herself. This is her story:

In 1999 at age 59, I discovered a lump in my breast. On October 1, the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, my surgeon removed a fast-growing, hormone-receptive cancer. I had four rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. I continued to work every day throughout the treatments.

I was determined to be a positive example to my family and friends because, in many ways, the cancer was harder for others than for myself. I told everyone what they could expect and encouraged them to ask questions. I didn't want my grandchildren to be fearful, so I showed them my bald head and asked if they wanted to draw a smiley face on the back. We cried and laughed together.

During this time, I was struggling with questions and decisions and had no place to go for answers. I felt the Lord was leading me to share my experience with others. So with the help of Pastor Jan, we got together with a small group of survivors, and Uplifters was born at CCG.

For the first two years, we met once a month with 10-15 people. We are now an "on call" group of survivors who meet when there is a need. We provide gift bags and are available to meet with patients, share experiences, answer questions, and offer hope, prayer, and whatever support they need.

Although it was a frightening path to walk, I was able to face my own mortality with the knowledge that my life was in God’s hands. What a mighty experience it was to feel an incredible strengthening of my faith. And what a sense of freedom I had to feel the lift of the prayers of friends, family, and others. Those of us who are breast-cancer survivors have so much to share with others who are going through the same experience. We can make the path a little easier for them. Keep hope alive...pass it on. For more information, please contact Carolyn Tinkle, 881-6053.

Women-Only Mission Trip 2008: Mexico City

CCG's own Samantha Laird will be co-leading the first mission trip to Mexico City sponsored by OMS's Dynamic Women in Missions on October 25-November 1, 2008. The group will be working closely with three CCG women on the OMS Mexico field: Robin McKinnon, Margaret Neff, and Kay Lindsey. The all-inclusive cost will be around $1,100. There are still 4-5 spaces left for the Mexico trip, so please contact Sam at 317-730-7705, or contact OMS at dwinmissions@omsinternational.org.

Be watching for more information about a spring trip to Ecuador.

Taste of CCG: A Review

Well, ladies, we had another delicious evening on August 25 when we came together for the 2nd Annual Taste of CCG. Thanks to all the women who brought a recipe to taste test. We had great food, beautiful music, great food, an inspiring message from Sandy Turner, and...great food! The top three dishes in each category were:

Appetizer: Apple Toffee Dip, Reuben Dip, Cucumber Dip

Salad: Olde KY Cornbread Salad, Oriental Salad, Southwest Cornbread Salad

Entrée: French Toast Casserole, Chicken Shepherd’s Pie, Beef Stew

Side: Scalloped Cranberries, Ranch Potatoes, Aunt Bessie’s Sweet Potato Casserole

Dessert: Pumpkin Toffee Cake, Buckeye Brownies, I Need Chocolate Cake

Tables of Christmas

Who will have a PLACE at your table this year? Pray for God's guidance and help.
      Listen and celebrate His answers.
Ask the ladies God needs you to invite.
      Come and
Enjoy! It's a gift for you too!

Dear Ladies of CCG,

Is your experience the same as mine? I already have the names of a hair stylist and a Kinko's employee who want to come to Tables of Christmas. Then there is a neighbor who I will invite once again and pray that she makes it this year. Another neighbor needs the encouragement that Jane Hoeppner will have for us in the face of loss and change and hope in Christ. I wonder about other women I encounter on a regular basis as I go through my daily tasks. I know them well enough to know they need Christ and a church family. Would they like to come? And who are the women at CCG who might need some extra help—physically, emotionally, socially, or financially—to attend? Before you know it, I have an entire table full of ladies, and then some.

At this point, it is so easy for the "But, Lord's" to start. If I invite a variety of people to the same table, they won't know each other—won't that be uncomfortable? I can't host a table; I have other responsibilities that night. It's a lot of work to haul the dishes and everything else over there. How will I decorate the table, which may be easy for you but is difficult for me? I don't think I have the time. And on and on...

But we want to come. We know in our hearts that it is well worth the effort. Changed lives are at stake, and blessings are in store! So will you join me and the many others who are already at work for this year's event on Tuesday, December 9?

In Christ,

Jeanine Isham

Tables of Christmas 2008 tickets will go on sale on Sunday morning, October 19th at 8am. The cost for a table is $80.00, payable by cash or a check made out to CCG with "Tables" written on the memo line. Individual seats, up to a limit of four, may be purchased for $10.00 each. Like last year, you will be able to select your table on a first come, first serve basis.

We encourage everyone who calls Community Church home to get involved in a Covenant Group at some point. But we also know that classes and short-term groups are occasionally necessary in our pursuit of Christ.

The Community Bible Institute presents a set of rotating classes and periodic short-term, special interest groups, to meet a variety of needs. These offerings fall into three general categories:Starting With God - for those exploring Christianity or new to the faith. Simply Christianity is a 5-week introduction to Christianity, based on the gospel of Luke, for non-believers and new Christians. Just for Starters is a 6-week, one-to-one mentoring program for new believers.
Growing With God - a set of six core offerings intended to provide a solid foundation for Christian growth. Courses include:Discipleship Training, Tools for Christian LivingMembership ClassTwo Ways to Live: Knowing and Sharing the GospelSystematic Theology: Introduction to Christian DoctrinesChurch HistoryApologetics and Worldviews
Living With God - special interest short-term groups (Financial Peace University, Marriage, Parenting); on-going men's and women's Bible studies; Life Bible Study; and our Seminary Extension Program, intended to provide options for life-long learners. Angel Food Ministries, based in Monroe, Georgia, has been providing quality food at inexpensive prices to communities all across the country for eleven years. Once a month, orders are placed with Angel Food for their standard box of food. (Click here for menu - menu changes every month). Individuals may order as many boxes of food as they would like for $30 per box. There are also optional items that may be purchased each month.

Once orders are placed, the boxes are delivered by Angel Food to local churches for distribution. That's where Community Church comes in. We are a distribution point for Angel Food in Greenwood. Anyone may purchase a box of food. As you will see from the MENU, only quality items are sold, at an extremely reasonable rate. So feel free to buy as many boxes as you'd like.

If you're no interested in the food, but would like to help, we will need lots of helping hands to distribute boxes to those who have placed their orders through us once a month. For only a small investment of time, you'll get lots of "hands on" ministry with many folks who could simply use an encouraging word.

Don't be Deterred by Resistance - Parents

October 23, 2008

Children often don’t understand why parents instruct, correct, or limit them. Your kids likely question your wisdom and motivations. Although your children may resist your parenting, don’t give up. There will be times when you’d rather escape than confront, rest than correct, or do the job yourself instead of instructing your children to do it. Parenting requires sacrifice and work. Be courageous in challenging your children in spite of their resistance.

Hebrews 12:11 reminds us that discipline isn’t easy to accept, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.” A child screams when he’s about to get an immunization. He doesn’t care whether it’s going to prevent a disease or not; he just doesn’t like pain.

None of us wants pain in our lives. But discipline does involve pain. Whether we’re doing physical therapy, trying to lose weight, or saving money, we must give up some things in order to gain something we want.

Be careful not to let resistance from your kids get in the way of their training. Children don’t usually have the foresight needed to work hard unless there’s some kind of immediate reward.
But then there are those occasional moments when your son brings in the trashcans without being asked or your daughter cleans up her room on her own. Those are the small indications that maturity is just around the corner. Encourage your children and determine to hang in there beyond the resistance. Your kids need your self-discipline and persistence as they grow to develop their own.

This parenting tip comes from the book Good and Angry, Exchanging Frustration for Character in You and Your Kids by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.

No Title - Tables of Christmas

Tables of Christmas Tables 2008 is coming! The celebration of Christmas at Community Church of Greenwood would not be complete without our Tables of Christmas event for women.

What is Tables of Christmas? Tables is an evening of music, a light meal, and inspirational message shared around beautifully and uniquely decorated round tables of eight. When & Where will it be held? Tables 2008 is Tuesday, December 9 at the Gathering Place at Community Church of Greenwood, 1477 West Main Street. Doors open at 5:00 pm for viewing of over 100 tables. The meal and program are from 7:00-9:00 pm. How may I attend? Women are encouraged to purchase an entire table and invite seven others to join them: family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, whoever God is prompting them to invite. The hostesses decorate their table. What if I cannot host an entire table? Individual seats are also available. If you need more than four, you will be asked to purchase and decorate an entire table. We can sell the extra seats for you. Consider partnering with a friend to host a table together. Everyone is invited. What is the cost of tickets? A table of eight costs $80.00, payable by cash or a check made out to CCG with “Tables” written on the memo line. Individual seats are $10.00 each. When will tickets be on sale? Tickets go on sale on Sunday morning, October 19, 2008 at 8:00 a.m. They may also be purchased on subsequent Sundays through November 23rd and in the church office during the week. There are no presales. What additional information do I need? Hostesses will receive a packet, containing instructions and tickets. Invitations and envelopes are available free of charge upon request. You may also contact Jeanine Isham at 887-1866 or jeaninei@hotmail.com with any questions. Who is the speaker this year? Our speaker for Tables of Christmas 2008 is Jane Hoeppner. Jane is the widow of Terry Hoeppner, the coach who is credited with turning around the football program at Indiana University from 2004 through 2007. Jane is a native Hoosier who was born in Indianapolis as the daughter of a Baptist minister. She graduated from Howe High School, and she met and married her husband at Franklin College. She is still known affectionately as "Mrs. Hep" to everyone she meets. Jane serves on the Capital Campaign for IU Athletics, the Coach Hep Cancer Challenge, and the Young Life Steering Committee. Despite her recent loss, Jane wants to encourage us with a message of "Living Life with Purpose." She will share lessons from her past and show us how God is working in her life today. She is a warm and genuine Christian woman who is working to "make God famous." Every woman who attends Tables of Christmas will be able to relate to Jane in some way as a wife, mother, teacher, grandmother, widow, or sister in Christ. This special evening is a gift for you and those you invite as we celebrate the Greatest Gift of all. Please join us.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact one of us. We can be found on Sunday mornings in the hallways wearing a blue nametag. Also, every Sunday the name and phone number of this month's elder contact is listed in the bulletin.

Elders Available For Prayer
James 5:14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

One of the privileges we have as elders in serving the Lord Jesus Christ is responding to those who are in need of physical, emotional or spiritual healing. We are available to pray and anoint you with oil at any time or place, whether it be at your home, a hospital room or at the altar of the church. It is an awesome responsibility we have and we want to encourage you to follow the command of James 5:14 if you find yourself in need.
